Symbian

Symbian is the creator of the Symbian OS, the world's most popular mobile operating system.

The company, which was founded in 1998 by Ericsson, Nokia, Motorola and Psion, has grown into a remarkable technological successes with over 200 million handsets shipped to date.

On December 2nd, 2008, Nokia completed its acquisition of Symbian Software Ltd as part of its plan to enable the creation of the non-profit organisation Symbian Foundation.

The Foundation will bring about the biggest evolutionary leap in Symbian OS since its creation - consolidating technologies such as Symbian Series 60, User Interface Quartz and the Mobile Oriented Applications Platform and, ultimately, making the platform open source.

Symbian's Requirement

As Symbian moves forward in an increasingly competitive marketspace, attracting partners to the platform is a key objective. The Symbian Partner Network is an ecosystem to provide support to development partner via a website providing downloads, technical papers, system documentation as well as interactive elements such as the Symbian Developer Network Forums and Wiki. Symbian charges for membership of the partner network, and wanted a way of expediting the payment process globally via a web application.

 

Symbian wanted an application that integrated with the Barclays ePDQ payment system, and charged a new Partner, or one that was renewing their subscription, the correct some after taking into account business rules relating to VAT liability.

 

Because of the dramatic developments that were happening at the company at the time, Symbian had a very tight deadline for the delivery of this project.

 

eleventeenth's Solution

Building as solution based on our CommerceDLM payment platform enabled us to react quickly, and have a deployable solution for Symbian within 7 working days of their initial approach to us. Symbian's clear vision of what they required, and immediate response to any requests for clarification were key to helping us achieve this deadline.

 

The resulting system presented new and renewing Symbian partners to pay for their Yearly Symbian Subcription in US Dollars.

The system was integrated with Verified by Visa and Secure Code with Mastercard. After the payment has been processed, the payment platform send a confirmation email to the customer and to Symbian to enable them to reconcile the information with their internal systems.
