Ubisoft and eleventeenth shortlisted for Supply Chain Excellence in European Retail Solution Awards
Ubisoft's retail strategy employing eleventeenth's extTracked Stock and Sales Reporting tool reduces buy back risk on stock in channel
Strategy delivers 20% reduction in time spent processing retail data; saves Ubisoft the equivalent of a five-figure sum on each major UK release; and Ubisoft's back catalogue business grows year on year at a rate of 55%
12th May 2006 - London and Wakefield: Ubisoft, one of the world’s leading videogame publishers, and eleventeenth, the Internet development agency, have today been shortlisted for Supply Chain Excellence in the European Retail Solution Awards 2005. The awards will be held on the first night of the Retail Solutions exhibition at the NEC, Birmingham, June 7-9.
This is as a result of the strategy that Ubisoft employed to reduce buy-back risk on retail stock in channel and delays inherent in the process of stock and sales data. It appointed an in-house business analyst focusing on retail and market intelligence, as well as deploying eleventeenth's extTracked Automated Stock and Sales Reporting application, a system that manages and aggregates retailer sell through data into a consistent format in one central and accessible database.
"The computer games industry operates on a sale or return basis, so if stock isn't at reasonable levels as games near the end of their natural sales curve, then buy-back risks negate profit generated. Conversely, if stock isn't present at the time of sales opportunity, sales can be lost to competitors," commented Darren Bowen, Ubisoft's UK Head of Sales. "As a result of our deployment of eleventeenth’s extTracked, 20% less time is now spent on amalgamation and processing of data. This enables our in-house retail analyst to focus on practices more fundamental to the analysis and management of stock provisioning."
The ease of importing data through extTracked, which is built on OpenSource Technologies, enabled tracking of all titles stocked by retailers, giving comparable data across the full life cycle, which had not been previously possible. extTracked also enabled Ubisoft to set a 'Week's Forward Cover' level for each retailer, so that at a glance, Ubisoft see its sales opportunities and stock risks. This has resulted in more mutually beneficial relationships for Ubisoft and its 23 leading retail partners including Tesco, GAME and EUK, ensuring that they have the right stock in the right place at the right time, as well as increased profits.
“Time sensitivity and control of stock in channel is essential for the computer games industry, much like many FMCG companies,” commented Phil Atkinson, eleventeenth’s Business Development Director. “We have worked closely with Ubisoft and our other publishing partners to ensure that extTracked gives them the control and flexibility that they need. Since initial launch, extTracked has grown to become the leading analysis tool used by computer games publishers and it is thanks to the support of our customers that it continues to provide even more powerful retail market intelligence.”
In terms of revenue, since deploying extTracked Ubisoft has saved the equivalent of a five figure sum on each major UK release. During the first year of implementing the extTracked system in FY2002/03, Ubisoft was also able to track all back catalogue sales and proactively get stock to those areas of the channel that required it, whilst minimising risk in other areas. As a direct result of this, Ubisoft's back catalogue business grew year on year by 55%, delivering over 1 million units shipped, representing over 35% of all units shipped.
